Peter Beck, religion professor at Charleston Southern University, has earned the 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award from South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.

Beck views his role as a teacher as shepherding souls and pastoring. “I’m not teaching to a test,” he said. “I’m teaching to change lives.”
Jackie Fish, vice president for academic affairs, said Beck’s students “enthusiastically attest to the high-quality learning experience he brings to his classroom.”
Beck has taught at CSU since 2008 and is the author of “The Voice of Faith: Jonathan Edwards’s Theology of Prayer.”
This summer, he hopes to begin working on a book about William Carey, considered the father of modern missions.
Beck holds a B.A. from Boyce College and an M.Div. and Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
