Bibles in hand, children gathered at locations across the state April 27 for the State Children’s Bible Drills.
The 164 participants qualified by achieving successful scores in drills held first in their churches and then in their associations. State drills took place at three churches: Florence First Baptist, St. Andrews Baptist in Columbia, and Taylors First Baptist.
Four children from Flint Ridge Baptist Church in Heath Springs enjoyed different aspects of Bible drill. Dalton Starnes’ favorite part was quoting the verses he had memorized. Lydia Hinson agreed that learning the 25 memory verses was what she liked best. Gabe Reeves enjoyed learning where to find key passages in the Bible, such as the suffering servant (Isaiah 53) and the resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28). Leah Roberts favored learning the Bible books in order. “It was a struggle in the beginning,” she admitted, “but I got through it.”
Michael Anderson, children’s minister at Flint Ridge, said the process of getting ready for Bible drill was good for his church. “It provided a discipleship means between the families and the children in our church,” he said. “Families began reviewing together. One daughter and mother began studying every day for one hour. Anything God can use as a tool to strengthen families is a plus.”
The Bible drill program is administered by the South Carolina Baptist Convention’s childhood ministry group. For more information, contact scbibledrill@scbaptist.org or visit www.scbaptist.org/bibledrill. — SCBC
