A group of 33 people from Saluda Baptist Church, Saluda, and surrounding churches recently traveled to Nicaragua through Chosen Children Ministries of Inman, S.C.
The group ministered in the Leon area to the communities of El Chague and Tomas Borge, where people live in cardboard and plastic houses.
The primary purpose of the trip was to present the gospel to the men, women and children, said missions coordinator Bill Whitfield. This was done through Vacation Bible School, men’s and women’s Bible studies, church services, medical clinics, building churches, drilling wells, meeting physical needs, providing food and clothing, and ministering in the orphanage and in a nursing home for abandoned adults.
More than 600 pillowcase dresses and 300 pairs of boys pants were made by the women of Saluda Baptist Church and Taylors First Baptist Church and were given out in many communities.
In 2007, Saluda Baptist Church, through CCM, planted a church in El Chague. The church has grown to the point that the pastor wanted to start a Sunday school program. “Our team was able to provide LifeWay Sunday school materials in Spanish for adults, youth, grade levels and pre-school age so that they can begin their in-depth Sunday school program,” said Whitfield.
“How exciting it was to see the faces of these people as they, for the first time, were having the opportunity to grow and mature in God’s Word.”
