Rose Calder was recently honored with a dinner — and a KitchenAid mixer — by the Rose Calder Mission Group at First Baptist Church, Lancaster, to “help facilitate her ministry of baking breads and cakes for shut-ins.”
Miss Rose, as she is known by young and old alike, lived at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home from age 11 until her graduation from Greenwood High School, and she believes her love for serving others began at Connie Maxwell.
Miss Rose taught Sunbeams, GAs, YWAs and youth, and recalls a memorable trip to Cape Canaveral to watch astronaut and Lancaster native Charlie Duke “blast off” to the moon.
In addition, Miss Rose worked with 2-year-olds in the church’s preschool program and was also active in WMU, serving for several years as WMU director. Now, at 86, she once again serves in that position.
“Miss Rose is as energetic, fun-loving and hard-working as ever,” said mission group leader Betty Lou Still. “Her heart for missions and her commitment to serve others is the reason for her namesake, the Rose Calder Mission Group.”
