At the 218th anniversary and homecoming of Green Creek First Baptist Church, Columbus, N.C., the congregation honored their former pastor, Jack Weaver, by installing him as the church’s second pastor emeritus (the late J.L. McCluney was honored with the title in 1986).
Weaver preached during the morning worship service, and though hampered somewhat by advancing years, he blessed those present with both the content of his message and with his vivid memories of the time he and his family shared the ministry of Green Creek First Baptist. During the service, Weaver was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative afghan whose theme interprets the history of Green Creek First Baptist since its founding in 1796. The church plans to exhibit a plaque in its conference room acknowledging the service of Weaver and his installation as pastor emeritus.
Weaver served as pastor there from 1976-1984. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, Furman University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served churches in both North and South Carolina before his retirement. He and his wife, the the former Marieta “Rita” McCarly, live in Spartanburg.
