Courier staff wins writing awards

Baptist Courier writers garnered three awards March 14 from the South Carolina Press Association.

Editor Rudy Gray received a first-place award for “Remember to Care,” an op-ed piece published in August 2014 that recounted the tragedy of Jeffrey Baldwin, a 5-year-old Canadian boy who died from septic shock and pneumonia caused by prolonged starvation while under the care of his grandmother.

“Jeffrey was an innocent child who was forgotten and abused,” Gray wrote in the piece. “May we … serve as the hands of Jesus for blessing, and not for harm” in caring for children.

Managing editor Butch Blume received a second-place award in the category of faith reporting for the story “S.C. Baptist voices join evangelicals calling for ‘just and compassionate’ immigration reform” (June 2014). Blume also received a second-place award in feature writing for “Men find good food, gospel at ‘The Barn’ ” (March 2014).
