Fred Samuel Miller Jr., 87, of West Columbia, retired pastor of Saint Andrews Baptist Church in Columbia, died Feb. 5, 2015.

Born in Union, he was a graduate of Furman University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded doctor of divinity degrees in 1985 by Furman University and Charleston Southern University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Prior to his service at Saint Andrews Church from 1977-93, Miller was pastor at Fort Johnson Baptist Church in Charleston, Scranton Baptist Church, and Lower Fairforest Baptist Church in Union.

He served as chairman of the General Board (now Executive Board) of the South Carolina Baptist Convention in 1982-83 and served on the board from 1971-87. He was a trustee at Furman University from 1966-71 and served on the board of Baptist Healthcare System (now Palmetto Health Baptist) from 1987-2014.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Meador Miller, three sons and a grandson.
