Christians are called to love all people and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ. All people can have a personal faith-based relationship with the God of the universe through belief in Jesus Christ. This belief will prompt a lifestyle which honors God. Christians, in addition, are called to boldly stand against and denounce sin that dishonors God.
The Supreme Court decision on Friday, June 26, 2015, to legalize same-sex marriage has been denounced by an overwhelming majority of South Carolina Baptist Convention churches. While there is a clear biblical precedent for governmental support and upholding the laws of the land (2 Timothy 2:13-14), this in no way justifies our agreement with or obedience to, unjust and immoral laws. When laws are enacted that clearly contradict the Law of God, we must “obey God rather than man.”
Therefore, as the 2015 South Carolina Baptist Convention president, I publicly stand against the recent Supreme Court decision. The co-signing South Carolina Baptist Convention past presidents join me in opposing the latest SCOTUS decision that is contrary to the God-ordained institution of marriage.
