S.C. Disaster Relief teams swing fully into action; N.C., Ala. Baptists join effort

Two South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief feeding units are now up and running in the Columbia area, and mud-out teams are already at work assisting flood victims in the Midlands and Lowcountry.

One feeding unit in Columbia is providing meals for emergency responders, and the other is cooking for flood victims staying in shelters. College students from theĀ University of South Carolina’s Baptist Collegiate Ministry spent Wednesday setting up the second Columbia feeding unit at Riverland Hills Baptist Church.

A laundry unit is serving at the Columbia Fire Department, washing uniforms.

Assessors and chaplains are visiting homes in the Columbia area to estimate the scope of work that needs to be done in the coming weeks and months.

Mud-out teams have begun assisting flood victims in Lexington and Summerville, and assessors are working in the Myrtle Beach area. A disaster relief command center is being set up in Georgetown.

Baptist disaster relief teams from out of state are pitching in to help displaced South Carolinians. North Carolina volunteers will be leading efforts in Horry County, and teams from Alabama will provide assistance in Columbia.
