James P. Stokes, 92, of Seneca, died Feb. 7, 2019.
A native of Greer, he was a graduate of Furman University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served Baptist churches in Bethune and Blacksburg and was senior pastor at Seneca Baptist Church for 34 years. Following his first retirement, he served as pulpit supply for area churches and was a member of the staff at Trinity Baptist Church in Seneca. His final position was as counselor and minister at Lila Doyle Nursing Center.
He served with the General Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and was a trustee of South Carolina Baptist Hospitals and Southern Seminary. He served on multiple occasions as moderator of Beaverdam Baptist Association and was a leader of many associational initiatives.
Survivors include five children, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Ussery Stokes.
