Obituary: Alastair C. Walker

Alastair C. Walker, 93, of Spartanburg, died May 4, 2020.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, he lived in South Africa during the early years of his life, became a Christian at the age of 16, and came to America at 20.

In 1968, he was called to First Baptist Church in Spartanburg and served as senior pastor there for 25 years. After retirement, he served 22 churches as interim pastor. He also was honored by First Baptist Church in Spartanburg as pastor emeritus. He also was the recipient of the Order of the Palmetto from the State of South Carolina, served on the International Mission Board for 10 years, and was president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

During a trip to India, he was touched by the hunger and devastation there. When he returned, he enlisted the aid of a staff member, George Schrieffer, and they created the Rice Bowl Ministry, raising more than $30 million to feed hungry men, women, and children in India and South Africa.

He and youth minister Bobby Haley created the Kentucky Missions Ministry, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019 and continues to grow.

During his ministry in Spartanburg, over 60 young men and women who made professions of faith went into full-time Christian service.

He is survived by his second wife, Lou Ann Gibert Williams Walker, four children, three stepdaughters, eight grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia Carter Walker, of Valparaiso, Ind.
