College Football: NGU Squeaks Past Catawba in Season Opener

SALISBURY—The Trailblazers held on to defeat the Indians 40-38 in a wild season opener at Shuford Stadium on Saturday. Catawba scored a touchdown with 33-seconds remaining, but an incomplete pass on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt sealed North Greenville’s victory.

Freshman quarterback Kam Montgomery was electric in his collegiate debut. He completed 12 of his 18 passes for 212 yards and rushed for 85 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 attempts. Freshman wide receiver Jonathan Manley caught three passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

North Greenville (1-0, 0-0) will host the University of Charleston at 7 p.m., Friday.

Georgia Southern 31, Charleston Southern 0

STATESBORO—The Buccaneers were shut out in a deflating loss to the Eagles on Saturday at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Quarterback Lek Powell played most of the game, completing 6 of 20 passes for 69 yards, and was sacked six times. Jared Echols relieved him in the fourth quarter and completed 3 of 9 passes for 40 yards.

The Bucs were held to 41 rushing yards, led by Dwayne Wright with 14. Charleston Southern (0-2, 0-1) will play at The Citadel on Saturday.

Anderson 21, Keiser 14

ANDERSON—The Trojans defeated Keiser in Anderson’s home opener on Saturday at Melvin & Younts Stadium. Wilson Edwards completed 6 of 14 passes for 24 yards, but the Trojans did most of their work on the ground. Zaidon Gunn rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

Darren Lloyd also rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown on a dozen carries. Redshirt Junior linebacker Alex Ledford recorded two of the Trojans’ four interceptions.

Anderson (2-0, 0-0) will begin conference play against UVA Wise on Saturday.
