It breaks my heart every time I pick up a paper or hear a newscast regarding the policy of the Boy Scouts of America. They have taken a stand since inception that molds young men into productive citizens.
As a teenager living in Greenville, I was allowed to join Troop 19 off Augusta Road. Those were wonderful years of learning, especially the jamborees at Camp Old Indian. Our Scoutmaster and assistant were men who gave their time mentoring and training young teenagers to become good citizens. Everyone I’ve ever known who belonged to the Scout program took pride in our moral conviction, our country and our community.
When I was 15, the Greenville News acknowledged me in the paper and referred to my religious and Scout background. That was a proud moment for me; in all my 78 years, I have tried to stay faithful to both. God’s word still calls sin “sin,” and, to my knowledge, the permission to change has not been given to any man. Man continues to try, however, in order to give himself the freedom to commit sins of his own flesh. He will never succeed.
I realize I am only one individual, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. I still have the freedom to do business with anyone I choose, and any business or corporation that pulls its money from the Boy Scouts of America will no longer be patronized by me. I suggest that every Scout and Christian do the same, and let’s send that money to the Scouts.
