Lonnie ShullIn recognition of 50 years of ministry and community service, Lonnie Shull was awarded The Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.
The presentation came at the retiring pastor’s last Sunday service as pastor of First Baptist Church, West Columbia. Representing Gov. Mark Sanford, state Sen. Nikki Setzler made the presentation. Shull was also given a key to the city by West Columbia mayor Bobby Horton.
U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson presented a congressional award. Sen. Setzler also presented Shull with resolutions of commendation from the state House of Representatives and the state Senate. James Wright spoke words of affirmation on behalf of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Director of missions Johnny Rumbough spoke on behalf of Lexington Baptist Association.
First Baptist Church gave Shull and his wife Hazel a trip to New England and Canada, and named Shull as pastor emeritus.
