Stephen Allan Smith, 43, of Union, a pastor and former counselor at McCall R.A. Camp, died of injuries after a fall at Reedy Cove Falls in Pickens County.

The falls are located near Camp McCall, where Smith served as a counselor (his nickname was “Wahoo”) while attending college. The camp was always a special love of his, according to his family.

Smith was born in Union County. He was a graduate of Laurens High School and Furman University. He was a captain in the U.S. Army during the Panama Invasion, and was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division, serving for eight years.

He received a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary in 1996 and served as associate pastor of Second Baptist Church, Laurens, for two years. He was pastor of Holly Grove Baptist Church, Laurens, for seven years and Cavins Baptist Church, Woodruff, for three months. Smith served on the Executive Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and was a past president of the Laurens Baptist Pastors’ Conference. He was a leader in the Outdoor Challenge in Laurens Baptist Association.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Kondas Smith, two children, his parents and three brothers.
