Ray A. Ridgeway, 86, of Williamston, former chairman of the board of trustees of The Baptist Courier and an active layman, died July 31 in Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Williamston, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was self-employed in real estate and as a general merchant.

He was a trustee of The Baptist Courier for 20 years, serving three times as chairman, and was instrumental in the building of its current offices.

He was a trustee for Anderson County School District I for four years and a trustee of the Anderson County School Board for 11 years, where he served as chairman for three years.

He and his wife of 65 years, Lynne McCuen Ridgeway, were avid travelers, having traveled to all seven continents and many islands. They did volunteer missions work as Southern Baptists in many countries, with their main focus on the Ukraine.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Williamston.

Survivors include his wife, two children, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
