Capitol View – by Joe Mack

South Carolina Baptists value people, partnerships, prayer, innovation and integrity. We always have; we always will. Because these are so precious to us, we should want to be involved in today’s public arena. We need to recognize that, as Christians, we have a responsibility to be involved in the voting process.

We need to spread the word among our relatives and friends that a critical constitutional amendment will be on our ballot on Nov. 7. Of course, any time we vote to change our state’s constitution the issue is important, but this year we vote to protect marriage as an institution between one man and one woman. Don’t let the number of amendments throw you. The marriage amendment is the first one, and I believe the appropriate response is “yes.”

You will hear the argument that South Carolina already has a Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) on the books. You might also hear that a constitutional amendment would be overkill. While we do have a DOMA, activist judges in other states have ruled this type of legislation unconstitutional. We need to avoid such legal wrangling and vote to strengthen our constitution by stating clearly that marriage is between one man and one woman. This amendment also says that the Palmetto State will not recognize or validate any other type of domestic union.

The only way to ensure the biblical institution of marriage in South Carolina is to turn out an overwhelming “yes” vote. When Christians do not participate in shaping our laws, the tendrils of moral and social indecency slowly strangle the life from things that provide for overall good. The vote on marriage is not a partisan issue. It is a survival issue. In order for Christianity and families to survive tomorrow’s culture, a vote for strong values must be counted on today. Your vote must be counted in November.

Jesus taught about engaging our culture as “salt” and “light” (Matt. 5:13-16) and?participating in government as involved citizens (Matt. 22:21). Since we are followers of Jesus, shouldn’t we do the same today? Christians must be informed about the issues and the candidates, and be involved.
