Service to celebrate 50 years of church music

The Baptist Courier

A service to commemorate 50 years of church music ministry through the South Carolina Baptist Convention will be held Nov. 13 at First Baptist Church, Greer.

An incorrect date and place were reported in the July 27 issue of The Baptist Courier.

The convention’s church music department officially began Dec. 15, 1956, when Tom Westmoreland was hired as director.

Westmoreland and Jim Gill, the convention’s only two music office directors during the 50-year span, are planning the service.

Westmoreland and Gill are also writing a series of articles that recount the evolution of church music over the past 50 years. The articles can be found at www.scbaptist.org/worship.
