Lexington Baptist Church sent 22 students and adults to Waterbury Baptist Ministries in Waterbury, Conn., to work with Maner Tyson July 2-8. The group led in a FIESTA Bible School day camp, prayerwalked, and helped lead a community-wide reading of the Declaration of Independence. The group was led by John Swindler, student minister, and his wife Jennie.
Keowee Baptist Church, Honea Path, broke ground Aug. 13 for a new office complex to be constructed at a cost of about $500,000. Participants included Sam Atkins, chairman, building and grounds; Roddey Ashley, chairman of deacons; Harold Simpson, chairman of trustees; Jerry Mize, pastor; and David Sommers, contractor.

U.S. Army chaplain Tim Thompson welcomes soldiers to the FOB Warrior’s Chapel dedication in the region of Afghanistan where he has served with his unit since March. Thompson was formerly pastor of Mountain Creek Baptist Church, Edgefield Association.
The College and Careers Class of Whitefield Baptist Church, Belton, along with several high school students and four leaders, went to Atlanta, Ga., Aug. 26-27, where they visited White Water Park, shopped at Discovery Mills Mall, and attended worship at Northpoint Community Church, conducted by pastor Andy Stanley.

Jim Whitmire (standing, center), former minister of music at Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., now interim minister of music at First Baptist Church, Dallas, Tex., led a “Music and Worship Leaders Workshop” at First Baptist Church, Simpsonville, Aug. 25-27. Randy Kirby, minister of music at Simpsonville First, called the three-day session “a great time of inspiration, encouragement and challenge” for the church’s sanctuary choir, orchestra, contemporary worship team and satellite praise team. Also participating were choir members and worship leaders from Trinity Baptist Church. Workshop sessions were held Friday evening and Saturday morning, with about 70 in attendance, followed by a banquet on Saturday evening and a full performance during the Sunday evening worship.
On June 11, Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, recognized Cathy Morris for 15 years service as director of its Sunday school department.
Becky Rich was recognized June 11 for 30 years service in the preschool nursery at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia.
Mountain Springs Baptist Church trustees Steve Ellison, Bill Black and Paul Orr, along with Hugh Burton, chairman of the properties committee, present a deed to Barry Sawyer, chaplain of the Mountain Springs Masonic Lodge. The Piedmont congregation gave the parcel of land that was adjacent to the church parsonage to the lodge to memorialize and honor former and current members of the church and the lodge. For several years, the men at the Masonic Lodge have used the property for parking, and have kept it mowed during the summer months.
The South Carolina Baptist Ministry Assistants Association held its annual meeting at the South Carolina Baptist Convention building in Columbia this year. New officers for 2006-07 were elected. Temple Baptist Church, Ninety Six, celebrated its 100th anniversary Aug. 6. J.B. Abercrombie, a former pastor, was guest minister. After special singing by The Victory Quartet, 100 balloons were released. The church was formed in 1906 and was known as Second Baptist Church. In 1933, the congregation voted to change its name to Duke Street Baptist Church. In 1954, under the leadership of pastor T.E. Belcher, the congregation voted to build a new building on Saluda Street. Upon relocating, the church became known as Temple Baptist Church. The first service at Temple was held Feb. 1,1959.
McClellanville Baptist Church, Southeast Association, held baptism for 10 new believers Aug. 20. Earlier in the year, five people had been baptized and two more baptisms are scheduled this month. The church has a resident membership of about 50, with a Sunday morning attendance of about 40.
