William Wayne Hyatt

William Wayne Hyatt, 61, of Asheville, N.C., a former prison chaplain in South Carolina, died Sept. 11.

He had been living at an assisted living facility in Black Mountain, N.C.

Hyatt was born Oct. 24, 1944, in Gaffney. Following his education at public schools in Gaffney, he received a B.A. from Furman University and an M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Seminary.

Hyatt retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections in 1997 after serving 16 years as senior chaplain at Perry Correctional Institution.

During his career, he also served as chaplain at the Greenville County Detention Center and the South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia.

In addition to his work as chaplain, he served as pastor of three Baptist churches in North Carolina.

He is survived by three children and his former wife, Brenda M. Hyatt of Mauldin.
