In the campus worship setting, Elmore compared views of life to rivers and floods. According to Elmore, students can either approach life like rivers or like floods. Rivers point in a single direction and have depth and power, while floods spread in every direction and have no depth. Elmore used the example of the apostle Paul, who kept a singular focus on his ministry, even while facing death in a Roman prison.

Elmore’s heart for young leaders grew out of his experience working alongside and being mentored by John C. Maxwell since 1983. He is the founder and president of “Growing Leaders,” a non-profit organization created to develop emerging leaders. Through “Growing Leaders,” he and his team are equipping middle school, high school and college students on hundreds of campuses, including Duke, Rutgers, USC, and Florida State.
