I believe Billy Graham’s humility is a key to the Lord using him so greatly. One of his first crusades was in Fort Worth, Texas, at the Will Rogers Coliseum. I was a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1949-52, following graduation from Furman University. While in Fort Worth, the Billy Graham team filmed the first Christian “Western,” starring Hollywood stars Red Harper and Cindy Walker, both of whom had been saved at a Billy Graham crusade. The name of the movie was “Mr. Texas.” A segment of the film was made on the seminary campus in the religious education building where I was caretaker. It was in the recreation room where I assisted the director of the movie, Dick Ross, and other workers in setting up the surroundings for the filming.
Billy Graham was there, and I noticed he memorized his script as it was being filmed. He was so intent that it amused me, and I smiled at him. He looked up and saw me and broke out in a big smile, so I decided I would use this opportunity to meet him. I told him I was from Conway, S.C. He said, “I know where that is — it’s on the way to the beach.” (I am told he once sold Fuller brushes at Conway and the beach.) He asked me what the students thought of the crusade in their bull sessions. Also, I told him that his being so intent in memorizing his script reminded me of how we students crammed for exams. He said, “You aren’t kidding!”
