Eddie Greene, former state convention president, passes away

Lewis Edgar “Eddie” Greene, 74, past president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington, S.C.

Born in Charleston, W.Va., he graduated from Trinity College in Clearwater, Fla., Piedmont Bible College in Winston Salem, N.C., and Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Trinity College.

His pastorates included Crossroads Baptist Church in Ruby, Bethune Baptist Church in Bethune, Orrville Baptist Church in Anderson, Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville, and New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson, where he retired in 2003.

Greene was the former moderator of Saluda Baptist Association in Anderson and was most recently a member of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Stewart Greene of Surfside Beach, a daughter and a granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held July 1 at 3:00 p.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church in Anderson.
