Edwards Road Baptist Church in Greenville will celebrate its 50th anniversary Aug. 25.

The church began in the early 1960s in the developing region around Edwards Road in order to serve the people moving into the subdivisions that were growing up on the old Edwards lands between Highway 291 and Taylors. Edwards Road Church grew out of Cherokee Forest Baptist Mission with 23 charter members meeting in an old two-story house.

After acquiring six acres of land, church members adopted the name Edwards Road Baptist Chapel and called William Palmer as its first full-time pastor. The fast-growing congregation was renamed Edwards Road Baptist Church in 1962 with 233 members and held its first service in its newly constructed worship center in 1964. Aaron Rayburn is pastor today.

The anniversary celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call 864-244-2975.
