Four Charleston-area leaders received honors at Charleston Southern University’s December graduation ceremonies.

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey received an honorary doctorate of public service.

“The Baptist College took a chance on a young man,” said Summey, crediting Charleston Southern, along with his wife Debbie, for the success he has had in his career.

Lexington County Sheriff James Metts received an honorary doctorate of laws. In his speech, Metts reminded the graduates of their responsibility to stay true to their faith in a world that challenges it, and to bring prayer back into the classroom.

“As long as you put God first, you’ll be okay,” Metts told graduates.

James Bryan of SCANA Corporation and Sandra Ward of the Charleston Southern Women’s Council both received the Charleston Southern University Distinguished Service Award.
