For the first time, the South Carolina Baptist Convention has provided skill shops for ministry assistants in Spanish.

Held at White Oak Conference Center, the workshops are offered each year for church ministry assistants to obtain certification or to sharpen their skills.
The Hispanic class was attended by seven people. With the growth of Hispanic churches in the state, Dianne Cockrell, membership chairman and advisor, said she hopes the number of Hispanic attendees increases each year.
“Course certification gives ministry assistants an overview of many of the things they will face every day in the church, association or denominational office,” said Cockrell.
Six modules of classes included God’s call, character, leadership, communication, administration and ministry. The classes teach assistants a variety of skills from managing stress to record-keeping.
“They learn how to minister to the staff, church members and unchurched, how to handle benevolence needs and work with church members and non-church members during crises,” said Cockrell.
