
On April 2, the youth of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, Union, held what may become their first annual Relay-for-Life Youth Walk-a-Thon. They walked the track at Foster Park in Union for a combined total of 38 miles. Pledges and contributions prior to the walk-a-thon raised more than $700 for Relay-for-Life. Participants included Diamond Woodruff (front), and (back row, l to r) Jacob Wilson, Joshua Sumner, Jordan Guinn, and Danielle Jones. Group leader for the youth is Cherie Wilson.

Flat Rock Baptist Church, Anderson, celebrated Focus Week Feb. 18. During the service, the GAs wore their Mission Adventure badges and told about the activities they did to earn the badges, including prayerwalking, writing letters to missionary kids, and giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. A special service, “This is Your Life,” was held March 18 for Ellen Holbrook at Carswell Baptist Church, Iva. Holbrook, who has been playing the piano for 61 years, has served as church pianist for 37 years. With her is pastor James Bannister, who presented a plaque and other gifts to Holbrook on behalf of the church.

The Briggs family and Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, Union, thank everyone who took part in the March 31 benefit for Stephen Briggs, who is awaiting a liver transplant. Pastor Carrol Caldwell presented Stephen a check for $1,600 on April 1. Pictured at right are Briggs, benefit organizers, and Caldwell.

Approximately 60 women attended, plus a few men of the church. Pastor Denley Caughman was the featured speaker. Ten area churches were represented.

Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Dacusville, recently held an installation service for pastor Paul Turner. The service of dedication and commitment by both the pastor and congregation also emphasized the importance of the new pastor in the life of the church and community. The sermon was delivered by Tony Qualkinbush, Turner’s prayer partner. J.A. Bass, Turner’s father-in-law, led the prayer. The staff and pastor search committee also participated. With Turner, right, is Steve Shealy, who presented a gift of the framed commitment signed by the deacons.

A group from Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community attended the South Carolina Baptist Senior Adult Conference in Myrtle Beach March 19-21.

First Baptist Church, Surfside Beach, sponsored an Easter sunrise service at the beach. The temperature was 30 degrees and the water was cold, but more than 300 people attended and four people were baptized in the ocean following the service: Jason Smith, Carmen Carella, and Charles and Lilie Williams. Conducting the baptism were pastor David Pohto, right, and minister of education Jeff Moody.
