SBC nominees from S.C. announced

Nominees to serve on the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee, the four denominational boards – International Mission Board, North American Mission Board, LifeWay Christian Resources and GuideStone Financial Resources – the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the six seminaries and the Committee on Order of Business have been selected by the SBC Committee on Nominations. Nominees, from South Carolina, who will serve if elected by the messengers to the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in San Antonio, include: Executive Committee (term to expire in 2011), Paul Fleming, executive pastor of Forestville Baptist Church, Greenville, replacing Donald Tillman, Buffalo; GuideStone Financial Resources (nominated for second term), Tim Head, Mount Pleasant; International Mission Board (nominated for second term), Allen McWhite Sr., Tigerville; and Golden Gate Seminary (nominated for second term), Stuart Smith, Spartanburg.

 

Deneen named distinguished alumni

Henry Deneen

Golden Gate Baptist Seminary president Jeff Iorg will present the Distinguished Alumni Award to Henry Deneen, newly elected president of Greater Europe Mission, at the seminary’s alumni and friend luncheon June 13. The luncheon will be held in Room 008 A/B of the Gonzalez Convention Center’s river level. Deneen, executive director of the Center for Global Strategies, based in Columbia, earned a master of divinity degree from Golden Gate in 2000. An attorney, former municipal judge and chief legal counsel for former Gov. David Beasley, Deneen will begin serving as president of Greater Europe Mission, an evangelical mission agency, in September. The SBC’s other seminaries will also host luncheons June 13 in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in San Antonio. For details, see www.baptistcourier.wpengine.com.

 

SBC president names committee

Appointments to the Southern Baptist Convention’s Committee on Committees, Credentials Committee and Tellers Committee have been announced by SBC president Frank Page. Page, pastor of Taylors First Baptist Church, announced the appointments in accordance with SBC Bylaw 19, which requires that their names be released to Baptist Press no later than 45 days prior to the annual meeting. South Carolinians serving on the Committee on Committees, which has 70 members, two from each of the 35 state or regional conventions, will be D.J. Horton, Anderson Mill Road Baptist Church, Moore; and Gary Redding, First Baptist Church, North Augusta. Serving on the SBC Credentials Committee will be David Smith, pastor, Enoree Baptist, Greenville; and Marshall Blalock, pastor, First Baptist, Charleston. Serving on the Tellers Committee will be Kile Antone, pastor, Southside Baptist, Honea Path.

 

Evangelists to hear from Stetzer

Proclaiming the Gospel will be the theme for the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists June 8-10 as they emphasize the apostle Paul’s exhortation in 2 Timothy 4:5 to “Do the Work of an Evangelist.” Ed Stetzer, missiologist and senior director of the Center for Missional Research at the North American Mission Board, will be among the featured speakers at the evangelists’ annual retreat, June 8-9, at the Marriott Plaza on South Alamo Street in San Antonio. Stetzer is scheduled to become director of LifeWay Research on June 1. The annual Sunday worship service sponsored by the evangelists will be June 10 in the Lila Cockrell Theatre at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center from 8:45 until noon.

 

GuideStone walk slated June 12

GuideStone Financial Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention will sponsor its annual Wellness Walk/Run during the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in San Antonio. Messengers and their families are invited to join in the walk, which begins at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at the Alamo Street entrance to HemisFair Park. The park is adjacent to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The first 500 registered walkers to stop by the Wellness Walk booth at the convention center will receive a free T-shirt.
