Columbia’s Shandon Baptist Church was founded in October 1907. As we celebrate the 100th year of the church’s ministry, we are seeking photographs of several former pastors. We will be grateful for any help that churches and others can provide. We will gladly copy and return your photos, or we may travel to your city to make copies on your premises.
The founding pastor was Carlile Courtenay (1907-1909), a native of Charleston. After his resignation as Shandon’s pastor, he formed several missions in the area, including at least two missions that became churches – Riverside Baptist and Park Street Baptist. He also founded an orphanage that later became Carolina Children’s Home in Columbia. We have one photo of Rev. Courtenay at a very young age. He was a graduate of Southern Seminary.
Arthur Joshua Foster served from 1910 to 1916. He was a graduate of Carson-Newman College and Southern Seminary. He also was the first manager of the Baptist Book Store, located at Columbia’s First Baptist Church. We have reason to believe that he also worked in Barnwell Association. We have one picture of Rev. and Mrs. Foster, but it is not suitable for our needs.
J.K. Goode of Clemson was called to Shandon in 1916, and served until 1920, when he returned to Clemson as pastor of First Baptist Church. He possibly served later in Barnwell Association. We currently have no picture of Rev. Goode.
Richard E. Hardaway (1921-1924) was called to Shandon from Allendale Baptist Church. After his service here, he became pastor of South Main Street Baptist Church in Greenwood. We have one picture of him.
The next three pastors have served a collective 81 years: F. Clyde Helms (1925-56), Enoch C. Brown (1957-77) and Dr. Dick Lincoln (1978-present).
Thank you for your help.
