After reading the May 17 letter about Southern Baptists and Freemasonry entitled “Offended,” I felt compelled to write.
First of all, I am a Christian. I have served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher, and as an assistant Boy Scout leader with my church. Second, I am a Master Mason.
Though Masonry is not a religion, I can assure you that Christianity and Masonry go hand-in-hand. We primarily believe in the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God. We take good men (yes, we do investigate them), and try to make them better men. We try to make them better husbands, better fathers, better workers, as well as better members of their respective communities.
That this great and wonderful fraternity allows me to be one of them is a great source of pride for me. I have been fortunate to meet other fine Masons in this state, as well as this great country of ours. I have also met other fine Masons in other countries where I have been fortunate to visit, who have treated me with great respect and hospitality. I truly believe Jesus himself is proud of this great fraternity, and loves seeing the work this craft does in his name.
Editor’s Note: Recent editions of the Courier have carried letters expressing opinions favorable to, and critical of, Freemasonry. The Courier believes that both viewpoints have been given adequate attention and no further letters on this issue will be published. – Editor
