Howard W. Abbott Sr., 84, of Troy, Ohio, formerly of Prosperity, a pastor for more than 60 years, died Aug. 23, 2007.
Born in Woodburn, Iowa, in 1923, he served churches in Missouri, Illinois, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Florida and Indiana.
He retired as a chaplain from the Iowa Department of Corrections after more than 23 years of service. He previously worked as a chaplain with the Michigan City, Ind., Department of Corrections.
Abbott was an Army and Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the cavalry while with the Army and as a chaplain with the Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion Post #172 in Columbia.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Hermen Abbott, two children, two adopted children, two stepchildren and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children.
