George E. Turbeville, 85, of Columbia, a pastor and former president of the South Carolina Baptist Pastor’s Conference, active in the work of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, died Feb. 19, 2008.

Born in Columbia, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was involved in the liberating of Manila, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star.

Turbeville received his education from the University of South Carolina, graduating with a degree in psychology. His theological training was at Southeastern Baptist Seminary. He also graduated from the Clinical Pastoral Care School, South Carolina Baptist Hospital.

He was ordained by Rosewood Baptist Church, Columbia. He pastored four churches for 34 years before his retirement in 1987. During his retirement years, he served as interim pastor of 17 churches.

He wrote more than 500 devotional articles for the Union Daily Times. His writings also appeared in Southern Baptist Church Musician Magazine and The Baptist Courier.

His denominational service included: moderator, Columbia Metro Baptist Association; president, South Carolina Baptist Pastor’s Conference; General Board, South Carolina Baptist Convention; Executive Committee, South Carolina Baptist Convention; state budget committee; Royal Ambassador camp committee; state convention nominating committee; and state convention personnel committee.

Survivors include his wife, Flo Jackson Turbeville, a son, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son and a daughter.
