For the second-straight year, the Area 6 Special Olympics Spring Games were held April 3 on the Bagwell-Settle Track at Charleston Southern University. As they were a year ago, Charleston Southern student-athletes were heavily involved as volunteers for the event.
“Special Olympics South Carolina is excited about the partnership with Charleston Southern University,” commented Sue Maner, vice president of programs and communications for the Special Olympics South Carolina. “With the university hosting the annual Spring Games for Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley Counties, athletes enjoyed competing on first-class facilities with the assistance of the university student volunteers.
“The maturity of the student volunteers, topped off with their enthusiasm, has made the games a wonderful experience for our athletes,” Maner continued. We look forward to many more opportunities to partner with Charleston Southern University for year-round sports competitions for the area Special Olympics program. “
The chance to serve the Special Olympians is a natural fit for Charleston Southern, where a servant’s attitude is a point of emphasis around the campus.
“I think it is a real privilege – to host the Special Olympics games,” said CSU athletic director Hank Small, who also had the responsibility of ringing in the games. “We all benefit a great deal by having these athletes compete on our campus. They represent the very best of competition. We benefit so much from seeing the joy in their faces.”
