On Oct. 6, 1895, George C. Riser, a deacon, read a centennial paper to the members of Bethabara Baptist Church that they had asked him to prepare. At the close of the paper was a note that indicated 100 handwritten copies had been made, but Sarah B. Segars wrote a historical sketch of Bethabara Baptist Church in 1956 and found only a portion of the last page of that centennial history.
According to the minutes of Bethabara Baptist Church, located just below Cross Hill near Lake Greenwood, the following people were active in leadership positions in the church in the 1890s and early 1900s – John C. Chapman, W.P. Turner, John C. Hill Jr., James Atchison, Edd Chapman, R.S. Griffin, J.B. Watts, W.P. Neely, David Owens, George C. Riser, Elkin Griffin, Thomas Hill, E.L. Wells, and W.E. Griffin.
If any descendants of the above people know anything about a copy of the centennial paper, I would deeply appreciate your contacting me: Rev. Ed Quattlebaum, 105 West Copeland Circle, Laurens, S.C. 29360-1752. My telephone number is 864-681-4646, and my e-mail address is edmar@backroads.net.
I was pastor of Bethabara Baptist Church from May 1998 through September 2006. I completed an extensive history of the church in 2007 after working on it for six years. Even though I have completed the history, I still have an earnest desire to find a copy of the centennial paper.
If you can help in any way, please contact me at the above address.
