
The Children in Action/KidLink group, along with members of Graham Baptist Church, Sumter, collected new and slightly used socks for the homeless in San Francisco. “Sock it to ’em in San Francisco” was part of their Live Action Project in which the children learned about homeless people in America. Carrol Caldwell, pastor of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church, Union, was recently awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for Excellence in Teaching Professional Development Courses from 1988 to 2008 by Clemson University. The award was presented by Helena Douglas, executive director for professional advancement and continuing education.


Swift Creek Baptist Church, Welsh Neck Baptist Association, was the site of the spring meeting for the association’s Woman’s Missionary Union. Interim pastor Horace Jackson welcomed the group, and Debbie Barfield, associational WMU director, presided over the meeting. Retired missionary Jimmy Miller, who served 27 years in Ecuador, South America, was keynote speaker. The topic of his address was “Serving a Cup of Living Water.” Others participating in the event were Rachel Flowers, Swift Creek WMU director; Joyce Rogers, WMU executive board; Lynn Woodham, Faith Baptist Church; and members of Mechanicsville Baptist Church, who presented a skit.

Lizzie Dill, Ruth Bruce and Maggie Campbell – the oldest mothers (each more than 90 years old) who are also active members of Ebenezer Welcome Baptist Church, Landrum – were given Mother’s Day corsages May 11 during morning worship.?The church also has three others in nursing care who are 90 years of age or older: Nellie Tate, Gwendolyn Howard and Monell Southern.

Don Thompson was ordained to the ministry April 27 by Sharon Baptist Church, Carolina Baptist Association. Pastor Andy Bell presented Thompson with his certificate of ordination. Thompson has been called as pastor by Lord’s Way Baptist Church, Little River.

First Baptist Church, Varnville, presented fireman and law enforcement Bibles to the Varnville and Hampton Fire departments and area DNR law enforcement officers during morning worship service May 20. With the group is pastor Tommy Kelly.

Donnie and Wallace Hughes were honored June 1 at First Baptist Church, Landrum, with a framed resolution for “Lifetime Service” from the South Carolina House of Representatives and the Order of the Palmetto from Gov. Mark Sanford. With them is Bob Walker, member of the House of Representatives from Landrum, and deacon of First Baptist Church. Wallace completed duties June 11 after serving as interim pastor at First Baptist for 22 months. Andy Allen began duties as pastor June 15.

Members of Mountain Springs Baptist Church, Piedmont, held groundbreaking June 1 to celebrate the beginning of their building program. Pastor Tracy Ivester led the service, which was held on the recently purchased property at 410 Mountain Springs Road, just a short distance down the road from the current building. Phase I of the building program will consist of 16 classrooms, offices, kitchen, and worship center with choir and music facilities. The building was designed by Neal and Prince Architects of Greenville, and construction will be done by Cely Construction of Powdersville.

The Ladies of New Beginning Baptist Church, Scranton, were honored with a Mother-Daughter Tea, hosted by the WMU of the church. They were served refreshments by pastor Danny Grace, Presley Pate and Glen Coleman. The group enjoyed playing croquet, horseshoes and badminton.

Volunteers from Charleston Southern University recently helped with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore project in Jedburg. CSU provided volunteers from the athletic and student services staffs, who spent the day caulking, painting and landscaping. Travis Carter has resigned as minister of music from First Baptist Church, Hemingway. The church observed Travis Carter Day April 27 to honor him for his 10 years of service. Carter, a graduate of Clemson University, has worked with the South Carolina Highway Department, taught school and served as head of the civil engineering department at Horry Georgetown Technical College. He also formed and traveled throughout the Southeast with the Sabers Quartet. Pastor Phillip Latta presented Carter with a plaque and a gift from the church. On May 4, Carter was also chosen as senior adult of the year by the church.

A group from Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, went to the Family and Faith night at the Florence Red Wolves game June 8. A special pre-game Christian music concert was conducted by Lesa Hudson.
