Alfred “Al” L. Miller, 71, of Dallas, N.C., a pastor who grew up and was educated in South Carolina, died June 8, 2008.

Miller was a Baptist minister for more than 54 years and served churches in South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida.

He was born in Shelby, N.C., but grew up in Woodruff. He was a graduate of Furman University and Southeastern Baptist Seminary, where he earned a doctor of ministry degree.

His ministry began at West End Baptist Church in Woodruff in 1954; he preached his last sermon at the same church on March 25, 2008.

His denominational service included the Christian Life Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. He also wrote Sunday school lessons for the convention. In North Carolina, he served on several state convention boards and committees.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Beaver Miller, two children and two grandchildren
