Charles E. Hood Jr., 89, of Laurens, a retired pastor and author, died Aug. 16, 2008.

Born in Slidell, La., he graduated from the Baptist Bible Institute in New Orleans in 1944 and pastored three Baptist churches in Louisiana before moving to South Carolina in 1946.

He served as pastor of Kirby Memorial Baptist Church in Gaffney, where he was elected pastor emeritus, and at Edwards Road Baptist Church in Greenville.

After retiring to Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, he published several books, including “Victory in Marriage,” “The Heavenly Host and Angels,” and “Seven Day Journey Into Glory.”

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Laurens, sang with the Martha Franks Singers and taught Sunday School at Martha Franks for eight years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors include his wife, Bette Buckner Hood, two stepchildren and three step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Alethea B. Hood.
