We have all experienced change in our lives. Some of us don’t even like to think about change, while other personalities seem to thrive on it. Whether we like it or loathe it, change is real. It is happening to us, around us, in us, through us, and often because of us. But behind all the change is God, who never changes. He has no need to change because he is perfect. It is a great tonic to trust a sovereign unchanging God who knows what he is doing always.

Most of us probably don’t like to think about change because it threatens our own sense of control. We seem to find a sense of security in believing that things do not need to change too much. However, a Christian’s best sense of security is not found in this world but in a relationship with Christ. In him we are secure. He is in charge. Because he is, we don’t need to be.

A psychiatrist once noted, “The only sane people are those who know they are not in control.” In order to accept change more effectively, we need a secure foundation that is changeless. That foundation is God himself.

We are called to walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). We are also told that without faith we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith does not mean we always overcome. Sometimes we endure. Faith does not mean we win every battle. It does mean we are on the winning side. It is easy to walk by faith when no faith is required. It is easy to walk by sight and call it faith. It is really living when we can walk by faith by trusting God and obeying his word – regardless of the outcome.

Faith enables us to not only accept change, but even embrace it. I just turned 55. I have changed, and I have seen many changes. Fifty-three years ago, people were saying it won’t be long before you can’t buy a good used car for less than $2,000. People complained that stamps were going up to a dime. Thirty-five-dollars-a-day for a hospital room was expensive. Twenty dollars for groceries was high. Gas sold for 20 cents a gallon! The list could go on.

Things have changed. God never has. He never will. We handle change the best when we love God the most. That means walking by faith. It is the best strategy for accepting and embracing change.
