Intersections: Where Faith Meets Life – by Bob Weathers

Sometimes the power to stop evil comes in the most unexpected packages.

That’s what a Myrtle Beach robber learned on Nov. 14. The thief, dressed in black, hands gloved and face covered, approached a car with a 9-year-old girl inside alone. It must have looked like an easy mark.

The mom and daughter had eaten at a fast-food restaurant, and Mom decided to swing by the house and secure the family dog. She left her child and her purse in the car. And left the car door open. You know how that goes. Only be a minute.

And it was in that instant that the robber, who never said a word, appeared as if from nowhere and reached in through the open door to snatch Mom’s purse. But he didn’t count on the 9-year-old warrior inside. First she grabbed the purse and refused to relinquish it. A tug of war ensued, and the daring child lobbed a toy at him and hit him hard in the temple.

He staggered, but he wasn’t giving up, and she wasn’t letting go. But that’s when he made his last mistake. He leaned in further, as if, perhaps, to accost this young defender. She read the cue and slugged him in the nose. One precise blow. Bet he didn’t see that coming.

He gave up and trotted off.

It’s the lesson that resonates through the hallways of time. Great warriors can come in compact packages. Like pre-teen girls. Or baby boys.

I wonder what Satan thought? He believed he could plunder God’s handiwork unhindered. He could steal, kill, and destroy unchallenged. Maybe he was looking for God’s power to come, God’s wrath to fall, knowing this rampage could not last forever. Maybe he was watching for the warrior. But not this.

Then the angels sang and the shepherds stirred and the hand of God swung with might and grace. And the baby was born. The power of God in a package so delicate that no one would suspect him to be the King of all warriors. The power to rescue people. The power to dispel evil. And the power to expel the “thief,” to stop his plundering and refuse him access to the creatures God loves. One blow, planted precisely.

Bet he didn’t see that coming.
