South Carolina’s unemployment rate is within sight of 10 percent. Nightly newscasts routinely lead with stories of mass layoffs and corporate bankruptcies. Churches and denominational agencies certainly are not immune to the recession’s wide-reaching effects.
In our Feb. 19 issue, we will attempt to offer some perspective on the impact of the economic downturn on South Carolina churches and denominational ministries. Among the stories you will see:
? A summary of how South Carolina Baptist Convention institutions (colleges, children’s home, retirement homes and others) are coping with the strains of the economy, including necessary employee or budget cuts.
? A similar summary of adjustments being made at Southern Baptist Convention seminaries and agencies.
? An interview with Gary Horton, retirement and insurance services director for the SCBC, on how churches can take steps to protect pastors’ retirement and insurance needs.
? An article detailing how the state convention staff is preparing to serve churches that are assisting their communities during the economic hardship.
