
The sanctuary of Mountain Creek Baptist Church in southern Anderson County was destroyed by fire Feb. 9.

Onlookers said flames leapt 30 to 40 feet in the air. The 165-year-old sanctuary was a total loss.
Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and started in a malfunctioning heating-and-air-conditioning unit.
The church will rebuild, said pastor Ray Thompson. In the meantime, members will hold worship services at the Saluda Baptist Association office, about five miles away.
“There has been such an incredible outpouring of love and support from churches and individuals,” Thompson said.
“It’s just been amazing how we’ve all pulled together. It’s very encouraging, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
