Christopher Jefferson “Jeff” Futrell Jr., a retired pastor and South Carolina Baptist Convention staff member, died March 7, 2009.

Futrell, 81, was a resident at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens.

Born Nov. 14, 1927, in Savannah, Ga., he graduated from Furman University and Southwestern Baptist Seminary with master’s degrees in theology and religious education.

In 1952, he served as pastor in Kershaw County at Bethune Baptist Church, Shamrock Baptist Church and Timrod Baptist Church simultaneously for a year. He then became the first full-time pastor of Timrod Baptist Church. After serving there, he then became the pastor of Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood from 1955 to 1961.

Futrell served on the staff of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and was also an associate director of discipleship training for more than 32 years. He was also a media library consultant for the convention. In 1993, he retired from the convention to become director of missions for Ridge Baptist Association.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rebecca Gregory Futrell, two sons, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
