Washington bureaucrats are pushing hard for a vote on national health care reform. Provisions in the legislation allow abortion on demand, override state abortion laws, and establish federal funding for abortions. The National Right to Life Web site states that the Kennedy bill and the House Democratic leadership bill would result in the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.

Leading pro-abortion advocacy groups have made statements admitting that they hope to mandate access to abortion for all women through provisions of national health care restructuring legislation. This is one of the goals high on the President’s list. We cannot afford to be a country that celebrates taking a life because it is inconvenient for the mother to deliver a live baby.

So far, two massive health care bills have been unveiled, one in the Senate and one in the House. The full House is expected to vote on its version of the bill at the end of July. Senate floor action could occur shortly thereafter. The White House wants legislation passed by the end of August so the Senate and the Congress can hammer out a plan after Labor Day.

These changes will affect every person in our country. While reform implies a positive change, the reality is best expressed by Sen. Judd Gregg (New Hampshire), “This supposed health care fix is a health care failure and a disaster for the American people.” The atrocities of abortion cannot, and should not, be tolerated anywhere, but especially in America.

I encourage you to call your senator and your congressman and urge them to vote against any legislation that funds abortions with your tax dollars. Tell the senators’ staff persons that you oppose Sen. Kennedy’s health care bill because it contains many pro-abortion mandates. Senators Graham and DeMint can be reached through the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

Also, please call your U.S. House member and tell them you oppose the House Democratic Leadership health care reform bill because it contains many pro-abortion mandates. The Congressional switchboard number is (202) 225-3121.

Additionally, Senate majority leader Harry Reid introduced hate crimes legislation as an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill (S. 1390). This amendment elevates homosexuals who are victims of violent crimes to a special, protected status. It states that the law is based on their “actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.” This perversion of the law lays the groundwork for prosecuting Christians who share their biblical beliefs about homosexuality. No special interest group should be considered as a protected group. When you talk to your leaders, please ask them to vote against the Reid amendment to S. 1390.

Pray that South Carolina’s leaders will support the sanctity and the value of life. Pray that all elected officials will have time to understand the legislation that they must support or oppose. “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6 NIV).
