One of the lead articles in a recent issue of The Baptist Courier (Sept. 3: “Beam disputes ‘moral obligation’ of Obama healthcare reform”) caused me to reflect upon other such politically motivated statements by our Baptist leaders, and it caused me to reflect upon our heritage as Southern Baptists. For a denomination founded upon the principles of separation of church and state, we have come a long way in my lifetime.
From one side of our mouths we reach out to our various Christian brothers and sisters, and from the other side we spout partisan politics. I don’t think we want to become the Republican (or Democratic) Baptist Convention. Do we?
