Joyce WoodAnderson University history professor Joyce Wood, who is preparing a new book documenting the first 100 years of the Baptist school, made a presentation titled “The Good Hand of My God Upon Me” to the South Carolina Baptist Historical Society, which convened Sept. 28 at the university. In this photo, Wood holds a framed newspaper article that describes how local leaders secured $100,000 in pledges for the founding of a college 98 years ago. With sponsorship from the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Anderson was established as a four-year college for women in 1911 and later became one of the first junior colleges in 1929. The school returned to its four-year roots in 1991 and today offers baccalaureate and graduate programs. The university will celebrate its centennial beginning in 2010 and culminating in 2011.
