Myrtle Ghent Killen Byrd

Myrtle Ghent Killen Byrd, 84, of Charleston, mother-in-law of Charleston Southern University president Jairy Hunter, died Sept. 27 after a lengthy illness.

Born in Lancaster on Dec. 6, 1924, she lived her entire life in Lancaster until her illness. She and her first husband, the late Bruce B. Killen, operated the Lancaster Creamery for many years. She was a greeter at Wal-Mart in Lancaster for 10 years, retiring in August 2008. She was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn “Sissy” Killen Hunter, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Thomas Killen, and also by her husband, James Poovey Byrd.
