Lawton Wells Jr., 83, of Elgin, a long-serving pastor, died Oct. 31, 2009.
Lawton Wells Jr.Born in Sumter, he was a retired Baptist minister, having last served Lakeview Baptist Church in Camden for 24 years.
During his ministry, he served the following churches in South Carolina: Corinth Baptist in Vance, Eutawville Baptist, Mt. Olivet Baptist in Camden, Cornerstone Baptist in Camden, Abney Baptist in Camden, Mount Pisgah Baptist in Jefferson, and Haile Gold Mine Baptist in Kershaw. Upon his retirement, he was named pastor emeritus of Lakeview Baptist Church.
Wells graduated from Furman University and Southern Baptist Seminary. He was a member of Blaney Baptist Church, Elgin. He also served in several capacities for the board of trustees of Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in Darlington.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Graham Wells, four children and five grandchildren.
