Garvin W. Allen, 94, of Greenville, a minister who served for six decades and retired only recently, died Nov. 13, 2009.

Allen

Born in Anderson on Independence Day, July 4, 1915, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. After accepting the call to the ministry in 1947, he attended North Greenville College and graduated from Gardner-Webb University.

He served as pastor at Southside Baptist Church in Gaffney, Beulah Baptist Church in Fountain Inn, Mauldin First Baptist Church, and Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville.

For the past 22 years, he served as homebound minister at City View First Baptist Church, Greenville. He retired from City View on Aug. 22 of this year.

Allen was married to Ethel Crain Allen for 52 years until her death in 1989. He later was married Catherine Campbell Moody Allen for 13 years until her death in 2005.

Survivors include two children, two stepchildren and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
