I read with great interest the letter by Rev. Mike Moody and your “Commentary” in the Jan. 7 issue regarding the 6 percent decrease across the board in the South Carolina Baptist Convention budget for 2010.
As a member of First Baptist Church, Honea Path, and a trustee of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home for several years, I think that the decision of the small number of messengers at the 2009 South Carolina Baptist Convention needs renewed attention.
A contingency reserve fund has been set aside for approximately $7.5 million to cover economic downturns in our ministry that could be used to assist the convention in times like this. If the reserve is not utilized in difficult times, for what will it be used?
I feel compelled to comment on this issue, having worked with Connie Maxwell Children’s Home for several years and witnessed the major financial efforts they have made to continue the quality care of the children.
