Let’s make a funding U-turn

The Baptist Courier

I am writing to commend you on your strong statement in disagreement with the convention budget vote to cut by 6 percent the monies coming to our colleges and our caring institutions. Our three universities, I think, are the best in the state! There is a strong competition across the state from the secular schools and the Internet appeal.

There is not a chance in the world that these students will be presented the gospel of salvation as in our Baptist universities. Not only does this Cooperative Program money feed the Great Commission and evangelism, but also a fabulous education door for years to come in church leadership. Rather than take money away from our education and care ministries, let’s increase it. I call on our state Executive Board chairman, Dr. Ed Carney, and our convention president, Dr. Fred Stone, to rectify this negative action with a positive action! With South Carolina Baptists across the state committed to Christian education and the loving care ministries, and us with a $7.5 million contingency reserve, let’s make a U-turn in faith and action!
